TEAM IN TRAINING
What is LLS?

WHAT IS TEAM IN TRAINING?

Team in Training is one of the most successful training programs in the country.  One in every 15 marathoners has been trained by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through Team In Training.

This year, LLS will train an estimated 80,000 runners, walkers, cyclists and triathletes to participate in a marathon, triathlon or a century ride in our most successful fundraising program nationwide.

CAN YOU HELP?

My name is Vicki Short.  I am one of the owners of the three Curves on this website and a massage therapist.

My friends and family will tell you that I have finally lost all my marbles. I have registered with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s TEAM IN TRAINING to run a half-marathon in November of 2005. That is 13.1 very long miles. I am a first-timer so this should be interesting.

How did I get myself into this?  Recently, I went to a “kick off” meeting to learn more about Team in Training so I could pass the information on to my members and see if they would like to form a team.  I did not go with the intention of signing up right then, but I did it.  I joined the team.

At the meeting we were shown a couple of videos. We saw the children and adults affected by blood cancers. As I watched the videos and listened to some of the ‘survivors’ and the parents who are dealing with children who have fought for and are still fighting for their lives, I could not imagine sitting on the sidelines any longer. How could I, someone who has been so blessed with health and healthy children not do something to help those who need it.

When I committed to the TEAM IN TRAINING, I committed to two things and both will test my endurance and commitment. I have never liked fund raising but my personal goal is to raise $4,000 by October 1, 2005. My second commitment is to ‘run the race’. I don’t intend to win by any means, however I MUST finish.

The first goal, of course, is the reason for this webpage.  Before you decide if this is something you can support, please click on the What is LLS? tab and learn a little more or go to www.lls.org/ntx

My inspiration and the people I am proud to run for are the Fort Worth Team's Honored Heroes:

  • Allan Kelley who is 2 years old and is now in remission
  • Robert Greene from Arlington who is 42 years old and is currently taking Gleevec daily
  • Layla Duckwall who is 26 years old. She is currently on chemo.

Now that you have met our Honored Heroes and found out more about Leukemia and the LLS, it is time for me to ask for your help.  As I said earlier, my goal is to raise $4,000 by October 1, 2005.  I know that is a lot in such a short time, but I have learned if a lot of people do a little any goal can be reached. NO DONATION IS TOO GREAT OR TOO SMALL, every bit helps.

If you are unable to contribute financially at this time, I ask that you keep me and all involved in The LLS in your prayers. That too will make more difference than you may ever know.

Donation information and a link to online donations are on this page.  If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you in advance for your support! By the way, when you donate $50 or more, your name will go into a drawing to receive a 1 hour massage (a $65 value) at my facility in Fort Worth.

May God Bless Your Giving,

Thank You, Vicki

ABOUT LEUKEMIA AND ALLIED CANCERS

Leukemia is a malignancy, which arises in the bloof-forming tissues, bone marrow, lymph nodes and speen.  When leukemia strikes, millions of abnormal and useless white blood cells accumulate in the tissues, preventing the production of normal red and white blood cells and the production of platelets.  These abnormal cells are carried throughout the boyd, the bloodstream and lymph systems.

Leukemia manifests in acute (rapidly-growing) or chronic (slowly progressing) forms.  Acute leukemia symptoms tend to appear suddenly.  Chronic leukemia symptoms may be present without any symptoms for some time.

Leukemia is the number one disease killer of children between the ages of 1 and 14.

Ten times as many adults as children are stricken with leukemia.

Due to extensive investment and research, the overall survival rate from leukemia has more than tripled in the last 40 years, from 15% in 1965 to 46% today.

In children, the most common form of leukemia is Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL).  The overall cure rate for children with this type is now around 80% vs 4% in 1960.
